Client Case Study - Ginninderry, ACT

Challenge

Ginninderry is one of Australia's most ambitious sustainable development projects, creating a community of 30,000 people spanning the ACT and NSW over its 30-year development timeline.

The development integrates a 596-hectare Conservation Corridor that protects threatened species, including Pink-tailed Worm Lizard, Box Gum Woodland, and Natural Temperate Grassland, requiring precise coordination between development activities and biodiversity conservation outcomes. Ginninderry requires sophisticated compliance management, including complex EPBC Act requirements, as well as state-level approvals.

Solution

Speargrass developed a comprehensive compliance framework featuring:

  • An integrated compliance calendar to get ahead of responsibilities each year, and a proactive stakeholder engagement approach
  • Risk assessment framework for Matters of National Environmental Significance to ensure management of future risks related to climate, ecological threats, and regulatory change
  • Implementation strategy supporting the Ginninderry Conservation Trust's conservation mandate

Results

The strategy enables seamless compliance management for this groundbreaking project that balances urban development with biodiversity conservation. Speargrass is continuing to support Ginninderry, focussing on automating compliance tracking and reporting systems, reducing regulatory risk while advancing Australia's largest urban-integrated conservation initiative.
